Lyra Dalton of Lopez Island Does Environmental Studies Research In Wallowa County

Lyra Dalton of Lopez Island, Wash. recently spent a month studying the ecology of Wallowa County and grappling with finding solutions to the area's complex environmental issues.

Dalton and 12 other students took part in an interdisciplinary program offered by Whitman College called "Whitman in the Wallowas." Students were taught by several Whitman professors and instructors at the Wallowa Mountain Institute. They also took part in several hands-on learning activities with local ranchers, conservationists, biologists, county commissioners.

Dalton is the daughter of Sand and Tara Dalton and a 2012 graduate of Lopez Island High School. Dalton will return to Whitman in the fall as a junior environmental humanities major.
